Downtown Canton, GA is the historic center of Canton, Georgia, the Cherokee County seat on I-575 about 40 miles north of Atlanta. The marble-and-mill walk

A history loop from the square to the mill company's old office.

  1. Cannon Park (130 E Main St): Start on the square: the downtown park with the gazebo, at the center of the historic district.

Downtown and the river

The History Center and the square, then out to the Etowah.

  1. Cherokee County History Center (History Cherokee) (221 E Marietta St): The county history museum on East Marietta Street; most visits take 45 to 60 minutes.
  2. Cannon Park (130 E Main St): Start on the square: the downtown park with the gazebo, at the center of the historic district.
  3. Historic Canton Theatre (171 E Main St): The Art Deco theatre on East Main Street; check the City's schedule for a show.
  4. Heritage Park (508 Riverstone Pkwy): A 48-acre park whose one-mile concrete trail links to the Etowah River Trail.
  5. Etowah River Park (600 Brown Industrial Pkwy): A 58-acre park on the river with a canoe launch, inclusive playgrounds and an amphitheater.

Cherokee Court House to Canton Denim

A county seat that a cotton mill made

The town changed its name twice in three years, got its railroad in 1879 and its mill in 1900. Here is how that mill’s denim became the town’s name abroad, and what the buildings are now.

  1. 1832-1834

    Three names in three years

    By 1832 the town was called Cherokee Court House. In 1833 it was incorporated as Etowah and named the county seat. In 1834 the name was changed to Canton.

  2. 1879

    The railroad comes through

    In 1879 the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad was built through downtown Canton. The New Georgia Encyclopedia says the town then drew summer visitors escaping the heat farther south.

  3. 1899

    A charter for a cotton mill

    The charter for Canton Cotton Mills was granted on December 2, 1899. Jones was the largest investor, putting in $25,000 of the $75,000 needed to start building.

  4. Denim

    From sheeting to Canton Denim

    The mill first made only cotton sheeting and lost $10,000 in its first year. Jones persuaded the board to switch to denim, and the mill was profitable by 1903.

  5. 1928

    A courthouse of native marble

    The Cherokee County Courthouse at 100 North Street was built in 1927 and 1928, after fire destroyed the earlier courthouse in March 1927. It was handed over to the county on November 14, 1928.

    130 East Main Street

    Cannon Park and the square

    Cannon Park is the downtown park with the gazebo. Main Street’s brick blocks nearby make up the Canton Commercial Historic District, listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

    171 East Main Street

    The Canton Theatre

    The City says the building showed slides and silent movies as early as 1911. It got its Art Deco front in a late-1930s remodel, and the City acquired it in 1997 and reopened it in 2000.

    100 North Street

    The marble courthouse

    The Cherokee County Courthouse was built in 1927 and 1928 of native marble, after fire destroyed the earlier courthouse. It is on the National Register.

The City describes the Etowah River flowing through town. Two riverside parks, joined by trails, give you a canoe launch, an amphitheater, inclusive playgrounds and concrete trails that link to the Etowah River Trail.

  • Etowah River Park, 600 Brown Industrial Parkway, covers 58 acres. It has an amphitheater, two community pavilions, inclusive playgrounds, a public canoe launch, a public bathroom and a bridge over the Etowah River. City of Canton: Parks & Recreation

Where is Canton, Georgia?

Canton is the seat of Cherokee County in northwest Georgia. The New Georgia Encyclopedia places it at the southern tip of the Blue Ridge Mountains, on Interstate 575. The City describes it as sitting between Atlanta and the Blue Ridge Mountains, with the Etowah River flowing through town.

How far is Canton from Atlanta?

The New Georgia Encyclopedia says Canton is forty miles north of Atlanta on Interstate 575. Drive time depends on traffic and where in Atlanta you start. Coming up I-575 from the south, the City's downtown directions use Exit 16.

How many people live in Canton?

The 2020 Census counted 32,973 people in the city of Canton, up from 22,958 in 2010 and 7,709 in 2000. Cherokee County as a whole had 266,620 people in 2020.

Yes. The City says the Canton Main Street program began in 2010. On Oct. 20, 2025, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs named Canton a Georgia Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) community, the top tier of the state's Main Street program.
